2. Storing food that your family won’t eat is another rookie mistake. If you can’t use the food, it only takes
up the space that could be used for your favorite foods.

3. Forgetting to rotate your stored food can lead to unnecessary waste. It is important to put new jars on the
back of the shelf and use the oldest food first.

4. If you don’t store a variety of foods, your family can get burnt out and resent the fact that you are storing
food. By storing a variety of grains, fruits, vegetables and meats, your family won’t be bored at dinnertime.

5. Choosing the wrong containers is another common error made by new preppers. Proper containers keep
out rodents and increase the shelf life of your food. Food also tastes better when it is stored in appropriate

6. Trying to do it all yourself is a mistake often made by people who are new to food storage. Adding some
store-bought canned goods to your family’s diet can make mealtime more interesting.

7. You need more than food to cook a meal for yourself or your family. Don’t forget to include a supply of
salt, baking soda and powder, oil and dehydrated eggs to your food storage supply.

8. It is important to store water. In addition to needing water to drink, you also need water to prepare soups,
beans and pasta. Forgetting water is a mistake that rookies will regret.

9. Don’t forget to store basic condiments. Food always tastes better when it is seasoned. A supply of salt,
sugar, olive oil, vinegar, pepper and soy sauce can add variety to your food.

10. Finally, many new preppers neglect to purchase an alternative means to cook their food. A propane
stove, solar oven and Kelly Kettle are all good choices. Whatever method you choose, be sure to get it
before you actually need it.

Learning to properly store food now can save your family’s life in an emergency. Avoid these common
mistakes to successfully get through a crisis.
